School Narrative

James Madison Intermediate School is a learning community that serves approximately 650 students in Grades Three through Five. Our student population represents diverse cultures, values, customs, languages, traditions, and religious influences, which merge to form a colorful tapestry of educational experience. Our goal is to educate the “whole child” by providing learning experiences that promote academic, social, and emotional growth.

Our school community is surrounded by caring experienced teachers, incredible support staff, and involved parents. Our academic programs are rigorous, and critical thinking activities are embedded within our curriculum. Technology is entrenched into our instruction throughout the day, as every child has a Chromebook, and all classrooms are outfitted with Promethean Boards.  The English Language Arts curriculum encompasses a variety of fiction and non-fiction literature. Social Studies concepts are infused through the ELA curriculum, bringing history to life, through reading and writing about real-life experiences. The Mathematics program is an integrated adaptive hands-on experience, which allows students to experience real-world mathematical applications. Our excellent physical education, visual arts, gifted and talented, and vocal and instrumental music programs enhance our students’ learning experiences. Our school benefits from a Reading Specialist and a Math Specialist who, not only work with students, but also support teachers through collegial coaching.

Social development is essential to positive self-esteem and the ability to sustain positive relationships within collaborative learning experiences. Our Guidance Counselor actively promotes positive social skills which assist students in dealing with conflicts. Our Character Counts Program emphasizes the six pillars of character education: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. The Positive Behavior Support in Schools (PBSIS) framework includes a core of prevention practices designed to promote positive student behavior. In partnership with our PTO, we have several after-school clubs and extension activities which complement and enhance our curriculum.

James Madison Intermediate School aims to continue excellent instruction, further develop technological skills, and reinforce positive character traits that will enable our students to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century.

Our goal at JMI is to provide a positive and safe learning community for our students. It is our belief that a culture of kindness, a positive learner centered, and technologically connected environment is imperative to academic success.
