Directions for NHS Applications
Congratulations on your high academic standing! You have met the first of four requirements for acceptance into the National Honor Society. This sheet will explain the application process so that you have an easier time filling out the application and proving to the committee that you are a worthy candidate. In this folder, you have received a packet that explains Edison Township’s rules for acceptance. It contains the application in which you have to prove your active involvement in either school or community service. You need to give character reference sheets to three of your teachers that support the claim that you are a person of good character, and a leadership reference sheet to verify your leadership skills.
SERVICE
In the service section of your application, you need to prove that you have taken part in service to our school or our community. You should put as many experiences as you have. Please provide certificates to prove your involvement as well as signatures and phone numbers of the people in charge of these activities. We will be speaking to these people to verify all service. Please hand in COPIES of your certificates of participation, as we will not be able to return any part of this application to you. Since all service will be verified, any falsification of service will be grounds for immediate rejection of your application. So NO LYING! Your service CANNOT be based upon classroom work/projects/activities for which grades or pay are given. This must be VOLUNTEER work.
LEADERSHIP
This portion of the application proves to be the most difficult for many candidates. Again, you have to prove that you have been a leader either in school or in the community, or both. You do not need to have held office in clubs or organizations to fulfill this requirement. You must prove that you have assumed responsibility and constructed some school and/or community activity. Make sure you choose your best leadership reference to fill out the leadership form. If you are unsure about your qualifications, please see us in room 152 or 153 during this process and we can discuss your application further. All leadership will be verified so please provide any certificates, signatures and phone numbers of those in charge. Any falsification of service will be grounds for immediate rejection of your application.
CHARACTER
The last sheets on your application are for character references. As soon as possible, you must choose at least 3 JP Stevens teachers to fill these out. They will give these forms directly to us, so do not ask to see them. We will then file these forms with your application. On the inside of your folder, please write down the names of the teachers who are filling them out so we can keep track of these sheets. Your application cannot be considered until all these reference forms are completed, so make sure your teachers have handed them in. Your names will also be submitted to administration for final review.
Completed Applications & Deadlines
You will notice that there is not much room to explain your service and leadership. Please feel free to add pages to this application. If your application cannot be read, it will not be processed! Remember, the more information you provide, the better we can understand your qualifications! Once you hand in your application, NOTHING can be added to it. The faculty selection committee will only look at what you have given in.
The application deadline is Monday, October 8, 2012 before 3 p.m. in Room 152.
You can hand them in either before homeroom or after school as soon as you complete your application.
Please do not ask to be excused from a class or arrive late to hand in your forms.
DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO GET SIGNATURES OR REFERENCES!
The Review
Your application will be reviewed by a faculty selection committee. You should receive your notice before the November break as to whether or not you have been accepted.
