MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT

MISSION

The vision of the mathematics standards is focused on achieving one central goal: to enable ALL of New Jersey’s children to acquire the mathematical skills, understandings and attitudes that they need to be successful in their careers and daily lives.

CURRICULUM

  • Students at Edison High School are required to successfully complete a mathematics course in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12.  The mathematics department offers Advanced Placement courses in Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Statistics, and Computer Science.
  • Department offerings, sequence of courses, and placement criteria are available in on the district website.  All courses are aligned with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards for Mathematics.  Currently, we are in a partnership with Middlesex County College where students at Edison High School may earn college credit for specific courses
  • Student placement is based upon district criteria, classroom performance, and aptitude.
  • Mathematics teachers at Edison High School are the department’s greatest resource.  Teachers are held to the highest standards in both content knowledge and instructional pedagogy.  In-service programs and workshops are conducted throughout the year to assure professional growth for all of our educators. EHS administrators and faculty partner in the dedication to promoting high academic achievement for all students.
  • The newly revised district-wide middle school mathematics curriculum will directly impact the program of studies at the high school level.  Students will be provided with greater opportunities to take higher level math courses at EHS which will better prepare them for college.
  • The focus of the Edison High School Mathematics Department is to provide a rich and challenging educational experience for our students.  This is achieved not only on the content of the curriculum but it’s application to real-life situations.  Our students will always be prepared for the challenges they will face beyond their years at EHS.  Calculators, computers, manipulatives, technology and the Internet are used as tools to enhance learning and assist in problem solving.  Various programs are integrated in conjunction with our course curriculum in order to enrich and assist our students’ performance on standardized assessments.
  • The Mathematics Department at EHS is proud to be on the forefront with the integration of technology in the classroom.  We are in our second year of infusing the use of iPads into selected Algebra 1 and Geometry courses.  Our iPad initiative fosters a hands-on learning experience where students are given the opportunity to engage with mathematics content in interactive ways.
  • All information regarding student placement, curriculum, and program of study can be found on the district website.

Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.  ~Albert Einstein
