  HEALTH SERVICES

Mrs. Susan Olan,
School Nurse

The first days of school are very exciting! Children are becoming adjusted to their surroundings...but sometimes move very quickly and may stumble or fall.  Some children get hurt during recess.  Although we are very careful to ensure their safety, some children bump their heads while at school.

Most children who hurt their heads have no long term problems; however, some children have problems that may not be noticed right away.  These changes might interfere with your child’s ability to function successfully at school, home, or at play.

The following is a list of health problems that can occur as a result of a head injury.

  • headaches that recur
  • dizziness or trouble with balance
  • change in taste or smell
  • change in appetite
  • blurry vision, double vision, sensitivity to light
  • ringing in the ears, hearing loss, hearing sensitivity
  • sleep disturbances
  • unusual body pain

These problems do not happen often, but if your child has any of these symptoms, it is important to call your doctor right away.

  • Severe headaches
  • Seizures
  • Memory loss
  • Weakness or loss of muscle tone
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Changes in personality, mood, or behavior

Please remember that any medication that comes to school needs to be in a labeled container and sent to the nurse with forms that are signed by the parent and physician. Health service forms can be found on the Edison District website / www.edison.k12.nj.us

If there is a change in a child’s health status or home contact information it is very important to update this information by contacting the school nurse.
