Fifth grade is looking forward to a fun filled end of the year!!
In the month of May, our fifth graders off to visit their future schools. The students attending Thomas Jefferson Middle School will be attending an orientation program on the morning of May 22. Our Herbert Hoover students will attend their orientation on May 30. The children will receive a tour of the buildings and some helpful advice from the sixth graders.
On May 29, the fifth grade is off to Philadelphia for their class trip. We will be seeing the wonderful historic sites the made our country what it is today. We will visit Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was created and signed. They will hear the history of the Liberty Bell, as well as, see the home of our country’s flag maker, Betsy Ross. We might even get the opportunity to meet Benjamin Franklin as he is often spotted walking the streets of Philadelphia.
Each of the fifth grade classes will have or has had the opportunity to read the novel Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. This novel teaches the children about what friends will do for one another. The novel is set during WWII during a time of unrest, where many Jewish families were fighting for survival. One friend takes many risks to help her friend and her family. The novel is definitely a page turner and something you should ask your children about. WWII is also a subject being addressed during our Social Studies time…from the roaring 20’s to D-Day.
