Somehow the calendar has turned to April and soon our students will be taking the NJASK. The NJASK is a standardized test that all New Jersey students in grades 3-8 will take in the upcoming weeks. Students in grades 7 & 8 will be tested April 23-26. Our 6th grade students will be tested April 30- May 3. Testing can often cause middle school students to suffer test anxiety. Middle school students often struggle to handle the pressure associated with taking an assessment such as the NJASK. If you find your child is becoming anxious about the upcoming test I recommend you consider trying a few of the following strategies. Explain to your child that although this assessment is important and should be taken seriously it should not be a source of anxiety. The anxiety of testing, like all anxiety, is rooted in the uncertainty of what is to come. The NJASK is an assessment that simply measures the skills and knowledge acquired by all students over a period of time. The NJASK is not a test that students should cram for in the next few weeks. I recommend students revisit the testing strategies they have learned for each area tested. Students should get to bed early and have a healthy breakfast each morning. On testing days students should remain calm and be confident in their skills. I wish all of our students the best and I am confident they will do well. FINANCIAL LITERACY REQUIREMENT MAY BE SATISFIED IN SUMMER SCHOOL
A Personal Finance course will be offered this summer in a traditional classroom setting at EHS Summer School from 6/25-7/27. In addition, this course will be offered on-line with 24/7 access through NJ Virtual School. The Personal Finance course will satisfy the State graduation requirement that became effective for all students entering 9th grade on or after September 1, 2010. There is no placement criteria, but applications must be submitted in advance for both the in class and on-line courses. Students will receive credit for the high school courses as listed above. The course name, credits and grade will appear on the student’s high school transcript and the grade will be included in the student’s GPA calculation. Tuition for the summer course offered at Edison High School will be $300 which is payable at the time of registration. The on-line course tuition, set by NJ Virtual High School , is $350, though it may be reduced based on the number of Edison students that enroll. This is offered as an option only. Students may continue to meet the Financial Literacy requirement by enrolling in either Banking and Finance OR Financial Fitness, semester courses offered during the school year at our high schools.
If students wish to take this course during the summer, they must notify their counselors of their intentions by April 30th by submitting the Summer Financial Literacy Form (click here). Online registration for the traditional class will occur during the registration period for Edison Summer School. Details and dates for registration will be sent to you by email. Online registration at www.njvs.org for the NJ Virtual HS Course is from June 20th through July 9th.

As new principal of Herbert Hoover Middle School, I am proud to welcome you to the 2011-2012 school year. This academic year, we begin a new chapter of our school's successful history. United as one school community we will take a journey requiring deep commitment to academic achievement and social growth. With a wide range of academic offerings, social programs, extracurricular activities, clubs, sports, and events this year promises to be both rewarding and fruitful. Herbert Hoover is a 21st Century Middle School that is committed to providing each student with the knowledge, skills, and attitude required to be successful not only in school but, most importantly, in life!
As you and your child prepare for this academic year I encourage you to take a few minutes to discuss your shared goals for the 2011-2012 school year. As we all know discussing such goals now and continuing the conversation each week will increase your child’s likelihood of success. I also encourage you to share these goals with the teachers and myself during back to school night on September 15th.
Middle school is an exciting time in your child’s life. Although this time is filled with learning, fun, and boundless possibility it can also prove challenging for both parents and children. The good news is Herbert Hoover Middle School will be your partner during this time. We, like you, want your child to be successful, well rounded, and happy. Through open lines of communication this can be achieved. We are all on this journey together and I am confident that if we all remain focused on our shared goals we will have a successful year. I’m excited to meet each of you and learn about the goals you have set for the upcoming school year. I hope you enjoy the last few days of summer and I look forward to a wonderful year with you and your child.
Sincerely Yours,
Brian P. McGrath, Principal
