The Board of Education of the Edison Township Public School District recently approved significant changes to the middle school mathematics program. Our overall goal is to expose our students to the most challenging and appropriate courses in order to prepare them for our high school program and for their future in college. Although these changes will impact the course of study for our highest achieving students, this middle school program increases the rigor of course study for all academic levels.
As a result of the course sequence change, student placement criteria have been revised to reflect academic expectations within each grade leveled course. The criteria provide greater opportunities for students to improve an academic level throughout the middle school grades.
In order to inform parents of these changes, the mathematics supervisors have presented two orientations during the week of February 13th, 2012. Part of each presentation included a slide show which displayed the specific factors involved in the new middle school program. Areas discussed included rationale for the changes, implementation plan, existing and new course sequence, and course offerings for students at each grade level.
If there are questions regarding any of these changes, parents are encouraged to contact the mathematics supervisors at JP Stevens and Edison High School.
