Middle school students and their families have a variety of responsibilities that place great demands on their time. Many of our students juggle full schedules including sports, extra-curricular activities, family responsibilities, and the demands of a rigorous educational program. In the early Fall Herbert Hoover and TJ Middle Schools conducted a series of meetings with central administration to explore new and innovative ways to increase student achievement. The outcome of this unique collaboration is Edison Public School’s newest program, STARS. From the beginning, STARS has been a collaborative effort with the single goal of providing students with an innovative educational experience that will increase academic achievement. During our parent orientation held at Edison High School on January 12th over 175 excited parents and students came out to learn about all STARS has to offer. Parents were happy to hear that during the nine Saturday sessions specially trained teachers will use a variety of research-based techniques and materials to provide students with new and exciting learning opportunities in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. What started off as an informational meeting ended as a conversation about this exciting program. Parents openly expressed their appreciation of this innovative approach to learning. It is our hope that STARS will assist the wonderful students of Herbert Hoover and Thomas Jefferson Middle Schools in their quest for academic excellence.
On Monday, February 13th at Edison High School and Thursday, February 16th at JP Stevens High School the District will host a Parent Information Night to discuss the recent changes in our middle school math sequence and its impact on our middle school students as they reach high school. Beginning at 7:00 pm, Mr. Vincent Ciraulo and Ms. Tina Sabunas, the District’s Supervisors of Mathematics, will present the information at each high school. Parents may attend either presentation regardless of the middle school or high school their children attend. A question and answer period will follow the presentation.
For the past eight years Herbert Hoover Middle School has held a Veteran’s Day Assembly that honors our country’s brave men and women of the armed forces. On November 15th our school had the privilege of paying tribute to local veterans representing all branches of the military. During this tribute local veterans of current and past wars were honored for their service and sacrifice. West Point graduate and Iraq War veteran Captain David Polonitza (Retired) shared his experience, knowledge, and patriotism with the students of Herbert Hoover. Students shared the essays they created for our Patriot’s Pen Contest. Our Girl Scouts paid tribute with kind words and a candle lighting ceremony, and our Choir and Band played an array of beautiful music. The ceremony concluded with a fitting tribute to those soldiers who sacrificed their lives in service of all that makes our country great. As the somber tones of Taps filled the room the recognition of those who made the ultimate sacrifice was overwhelmingly evident.
As new principal of Herbert Hoover Middle School, I am proud to welcome you to the 2011-2012 school year. This academic year, we begin a new chapter of our school's successful history. United as one school community we will take a journey requiring deep commitment to academic achievement and social growth. With a wide range of academic offerings, social programs, extracurricular activities, clubs, sports, and events this year promises to be both rewarding and fruitful. Herbert Hoover is a 21st Century Middle School that is committed to providing each student with the knowledge, skills, and attitude required to be successful not only in school but, most importantly, in life!
As you and your child prepare for this academic year I encourage you to take a few minutes to discuss your shared goals for the 2011-2012 school year. As we all know discussing such goals now and continuing the conversation each week will increase your child’s likelihood of success. I also encourage you to share these goals with the teachers and myself during back to school night on September 15th.
Middle school is an exciting time in your child’s life. Although this time is filled with learning, fun, and boundless possibility it can also prove challenging for both parents and children. The good news is Herbert Hoover Middle School will be your partner during this time. We, like you, want your child to be successful, well rounded, and happy. Through open lines of communication this can be achieved. We are all on this journey together and I am confident that if we all remain focused on our shared goals we will have a successful year. I’m excited to meet each of you and learn about the goals you have set for the upcoming school year. I hope you enjoy the last few days of summer and I look forward to a wonderful year with you and your child.
Sincerely Yours,
Brian P. McGrath, Principal
